15. Jul 2025
Studying, part-time job, free time - it can sometimes be quite tricky to juggle it all. But at empiriecom, it's often more relaxed than you might think. Working students from a wide range of disciplines work here, all of whom have their own paths and stories to tell, but still appreciate similar things: flexible working hours, exciting tasks and an environment in which you can simply feel comfortable. We took a closer look at what everyday life between lecture halls, laptops and team meetings actually looks like - and what the working students particularly like about their job.

Muhammad
Muhammad - Between studies and app tests
Muhammad is 30 and is currently studying for a master's degree in computer science. Since October 2023, he has been supporting the empiriecom team in quality assurance, where he is mainly responsible for testing apps, troubleshooting and technical analysis. for him, the job is much more than just a working student job. He sees it as a real opportunity to improve his skills and learn new things. His studies have given him the perfect foundation for this work, which he can now finally put into practice, and the work culture and the people at empiriecom are also helping him to actively improve his communication skills, project skills and much more. The fact that he works remotely from Erfurt suits him perfectly - even if he sometimes misses working from the office. What is particularly important to him is that he doesn't just sit at his desk in theory, but really sees how everything comes together in practice.
Thanks to the flexibility that empiriecom makes possible, he can combine his studies and his job perfectly. He loves his job and his studies and is happy to spend 15 hours in front of his laptop - basically, his specialist area is his hobby and his passion and he loves keeping up to date and acquiring new knowledge.
Shiyu
Shyiu - From studies directly into design practice
Shiyu is 25, is studying for a Master's degree in Usability Engineering and has been working as a student trainee in the UX research team at empiriecom since October 2024. She lives near Düsseldorf and is grateful that she can work flexibly and remotely - it fits in perfectly with her studies. Her job complements her studies really well because she can take a lot of practical experience with her and, conversely, directly apply what she has learned during her studies. Both revolve around user experience, rather theoretically in her studies, but very concretely at empiriecom on the products. At the beginning, she mainly accompanied the relocation of the projects from Zeplin to Figma - ideal for familiarizing herself. Now, she mainly works with tickets, for example on a navigation bar that needs to be easier to understand. Together as a team, she thinks about how icons or labels could be changed to make it easier for users to use She particularly likes the weekly meetings with her team - this is where they work together on solutions and share ideas openly. For Shiyu, this is also the ideal setting to work on her German, and her team is happy to support her. She particularly appreciates the team weeklies, where she can ask questions and improve her German.
Fasih
Fasih - From the change of studies to the developer era
Fasih is 28 and studies computer science in Brandenburg. After a few failed attempts, he has finally found the subject that he feels comfortable with and enjoys. He has been part of the development team at empiriecom since October 2022 and feels right at home here too. His course content and tasks at empiriecom complement each other more perfectly than he would have thought possible. He can combine his university tasks with his work in a very pleasant way thanks to projects that sometimes run alongside the semester, and the flexibility that empiriecom offers him suits him very well. The fact that Fasih has been with us for almost 3 years is mainly due to his team and the opportunities he is given. He is allowed to take on responsibility, try things out and learn new things, and is not kept busy with pure employment work. While he really appreciates the remote work, he sometimes wishes it would be easier to meet face to face with the other working students or his team, but that's really all he would change.
Majid
Majid - Taking the next career step with experience
Majid, 33, has already gained a lot of professional experience: Among other things, he was a physics teacher and software developer before he started his Master's degree in International Software Science Systems a year ago and came to Germany for it. During a joint project to develop an app, he realized that he was very interested in software topics and wanted to learn more about them - so he decided to study accordingly. He then worked for a start-up in the USA, among others, but realized that he needed more knowledge and skills for the international market and looked around for a Master's degree. With a place to study in Bamberg and his job at empiriecom, he is in an ideal situation. He can contribute his theoretical knowledge and experience and develop himself further at the same time. Compared to his previous experiences in other companies, empiriecom is really something special for him - he appreciates the friendliness and openness of his colleagues and how much they support each other. For Majid, the working student job was just the beginning, in the future he will be full-time at empiriecom and he is looking forward to the challenges he will then be able to face!
Basti
Basti - Between everyday clinical practice and UX research
Basti is 27 and is currently studying medicine in Erlangen. When he joined empiriecom in 2022, he was still in the middle of his political science studies in Bamberg. He has since swapped lectures on international organizations for lectures on anatomy and although his medical studies are very demanding, he is happy to be able to continue as a working student at empiriecom. Because: At empiriecom, Basti finds exactly the flexibility and atmosphere he needs to combine his studies and job. The fact that he had to reduce his hours and distribute his working hours a little more "chaotically" was never a problem for his team in UX Research. After all, in consultation with his team, they were able to work out a solution that everyone was happy with. It is precisely this mutual consideration and understanding within the team that he greatly appreciates. For Basti, working at empiriecom is a welcome counterbalance to everyday clinical work. He is now responsible for our BAUR Community and supports his team wherever he can - whether with copywriting, designing surveys or in day-to-day collaboration.
Selin
Selin - Social media, stories and creative freedom
Selin, 27, is studying "Literature Mediation in the Media" in the Master's program and has been working at empiriecom in the Employer Branding department since October 2021. There she mainly takes care of social media, blog articles and everything that comes together in terms of content. At the beginning of her time at empiriecom, in addition to employer branding, she helped out in the former User Centered Design team when needed, evaluating surveys and preparing presentations. She was also allowed to help with the move to the new website and try things out - something that also characterizes being a working student at empiriecom for her. There are always opportunities to try things out, learn new things and take on responsibility. When Selin had to move from Bamberg to Marburg for her Master's degree, she was able to stay at empiriecom thanks to remote working and the job is also very compatible with her current university routine - the flexibility at empiriecom is worth its weight in gold.
Samantha
Samantha - Between data analysis and media know-how
Samantha is 25, has a bachelor's degree in math and is currently doing her second bachelor's degree in media and communication. She has been working in the UX research team at empiriecom since March 2025 and is currently providing support wherever she is needed in the team - hopefully working with mousetracking is next on the agenda! What she particularly likes about her job: She can live out both her analytical side and her creative streak and her tasks complement the content of her studies perfectly. She contributes her own ideas, tries out new methods and enjoys the open team culture, where every question is welcome. For her, the job is the perfect bridge between her interests and her studies and is also characterized by its flexibility - because where else can she spontaneously change her working hours when she is needed as a cheerleader for the Würzburg Baskets in an important game?
What remains?
Very different backgrounds, different ages and subjects - but all working students at empiriecom have one thing in common: they don't see their job as just a part-time job, but as a real place to learn, try things out and help shape things. The combination of flexible working hours, responsibility and team cohesion makes it possible for study and work to go hand in hand here. For many, this no longer feels like a traditional working student job - but rather like a place where they can grow.
