A storefront is not a deliverable

02. Jul 2026

There’s a pattern we see time and again when new clients come to us: A few years ago, an agency or an e-commerce provider developed a storefront and successfully launched it. The project was complete, and everyone involved was satisfied. But then came the part that no one calls a “project” anymore: day-to-day operations.

Over time, requirements change. Browsers continue to evolve, security updates become necessary, legal requirements change, and issues such as accessibility are gaining importance. At the same time, users’ expectations regarding speed and ease of use are rising.

However, the front end often remains at the level it was on launch day. What was state-of-the-art back then suddenly seems outdated a few years later.

In this context, we refer to the “boilerplate problem”: The front end is developed, handed over, and then left to its own devices. Responsibility for maintenance, further development, security, and performance then lies entirely with the operator.

You can compare it to a car: You receive the vehicle, but you have to take care of maintenance, inspections, and any necessary recalls yourself.

Why We Do Things Differently

At empiriecom, we view the storefront not as a one-time product delivery, but as an ongoing service. For store operators, this means fewer technical coordination efforts, faster problem resolution, and long-term support.

Since we handle both development and operations, we can quickly identify and resolve the root causes of problems. This eliminates the need for lengthy analysis phases or coordination between different service providers.

Digital commerce systems are constantly evolving. That’s why we’re continuously improving our Commerce Suite.

New standards, optimizations, and proven approaches are automatically incorporated. This eliminates the need for additional migration projects or costly relaunches.

Accessibility is part of the process from the very beginning

The quality of a front end is defined not only by performance and technical stability, but also by accessibility and user-friendliness.

That’s why we don’t view accessibility as an afterthought, but as an integral part of our work. We take WCAG requirements into account from the very beginning so that everyone can use the online store without any problems.

Accessibility isn’t achieved by checking off a checklist at the end of a project. It is the result of many good decisions made throughout the entire development process.

But quality doesn’t end with accessibility and user-friendliness. Performance during ongoing operation is just as crucial.

Performance Is No Accident

Issues such as Core Web Vitals, bundle sizes, and Time to Interactive don’t disappear after launch. They are a constant part of modern online stores.

That’s why we continuously monitor these metrics and optimize them on an ongoing basis. This allows you to focus on your core business while we ensure that your store remains fast, stable, and future-proof.

Continuous improvement brings many benefits. Nevertheless, we often hear this question at this point:

"But then I'll be tied to you."

Many companies become skeptical at this point. After all, those who opt for a centrally managed front end don’t want to give up the ability to customize their design.

From our perspective, however, you no longer have to choose between technical relief and flexibility. With a modular structure and the right tools, you can combine both.

This is exactly where our Frontend Studio in the new Configuration Center comes in. It allows you to design the entire online store on your own—not just CMS pages or landing pages. This makes it possible to implement customizations much faster, without agency briefings, support tickets, or long wait times.

After all, it’s not just about successfully launching a store online. What really matters is that it remains fast, secure, and flexible even years later.

In our next post, we’ll show you how we make this technically possible.
